Background of the study
Yoruba traditional theatre, with its rich narrative forms, vibrant costumes, and dramatic performances, has long served as a cultural mirror reflecting the social values and historical experiences of the Yoruba people. In Irepodun Local Government, these indigenous performance arts have influenced various aspects of modern Nollywood films. Elements such as storytelling techniques, dramatic expressions, and cultural motifs are increasingly evident in contemporary cinematic productions (Adebola, 2023). Scholars contend that the incorporation of traditional theatrical elements into Nollywood films not only enriches narrative depth but also fosters cultural continuity amid rapid globalization (Balogun, 2024). This interaction facilitates a unique dialogue between traditional performance arts and modern media, where the aesthetics of Yoruba theatre help shape film narratives and character development. However, the challenge lies in maintaining the authenticity of traditional art forms while appealing to broader, modern audiences. The study critically examines how these traditional influences manifest in Nollywood films, the extent to which they enhance cultural expression, and the potential tensions arising from commercial imperatives (Ibid, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the evident influence of Yoruba traditional theatre on Nollywood films, there is concern that commercialization may dilute the authenticity of traditional narratives. The problem centers on understanding how modern cinematic practices balance indigenous theatrical elements with market-driven content production. This study seeks to identify the challenges that arise from merging traditional performance art with contemporary film techniques, and the impact on cultural representation and identity (Adebola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the influence of Yoruba traditional theatre on Nollywood film narratives.

  2. To analyze the integration of indigenous performance elements in modern cinema.

  3. To propose measures that safeguard cultural authenticity in film production.

Research questions

  1. In what ways does Yoruba traditional theatre influence Nollywood films?

  2. What challenges arise from integrating traditional elements with modern cinematic techniques?

  3. How can filmmakers maintain cultural authenticity in a commercial setting?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Yoruba traditional theatre significantly influences Nollywood narrative styles.

  2. Integration challenges compromise the authenticity of cultural representations.

  3. Strategic interventions can preserve traditional elements in modern films.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it bridges traditional performance arts and modern media, offering insights into cultural preservation in film. Its outcomes will benefit filmmakers, cultural custodians, and scholars in enhancing the portrayal of indigenous narratives amid global cinematic trends (Balogun, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the influence of Yoruba traditional theatre on modern Nollywood films in Irepodun Local Government and does not extend to other regions or cinematic genres.

Definitions of terms

  1. Traditional theatre: Indigenous performance art with cultural and historical significance.

  2. Nollywood: The Nigerian film industry.

  3. Cultural authenticity: The accurate representation of indigenous cultural elements.
