Background of the study
Yoruba traditional theatre, with its rich narrative forms, vibrant costumes, and dramatic performances, has long served as a cultural mirror reflecting the social values and historical experiences of the Yoruba people. In Irepodun Local Government, these indigenous performance arts have influenced various aspects of modern Nollywood films. Elements such as storytelling techniques, dramatic expressions, and cultural motifs are increasingly evident in contemporary cinematic productions (Adebola, 2023). Scholars contend that the incorporation of traditional theatrical elements into Nollywood films not only enriches narrative depth but also fosters cultural continuity amid rapid globalization (Balogun, 2024). This interaction facilitates a unique dialogue between traditional performance arts and modern media, where the aesthetics of Yoruba theatre help shape film narratives and character development. However, the challenge lies in maintaining the authenticity of traditional art forms while appealing to broader, modern audiences. The study critically examines how these traditional influences manifest in Nollywood films, the extent to which they enhance cultural expression, and the potential tensions arising from commercial imperatives (Ibid, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the evident influence of Yoruba traditional theatre on Nollywood films, there is concern that commercialization may dilute the authenticity of traditional narratives. The problem centers on understanding how modern cinematic practices balance indigenous theatrical elements with market-driven content production. This study seeks to identify the challenges that arise from merging traditional performance art with contemporary film techniques, and the impact on cultural representation and identity (Adebola, 2023).
